“We don’t get to choose our parents, but we select our lifestyles. Both of my parents died of strokes, so I have lived defensively against that trouble. The easiest way to shorten ones life is to do nothing.”

Mastering the Delicate Balance between Degeneration and Regeneration.

The answer depends entirely on how you define growing old.

Is it really possible to “never grow old?”

The human body grows old only when cellular breakdown occurs faster than the body is able to repair and rebuild itself.  It’s kind of like the up and down balancing act of a child’s teeter-totter.

Let’s call aging the process of breaking down & wearing out.

When a bone is broken or skin tissue is torn, the body’s own repair system heals our skin and mends our skeleton.  The “master cells” that replace those damaged bone and tissue cells thus repairing our bodies are called Stem Cells.  In fact you could say that Adult Stem Cells are the body’s natural system of renewal.

Adult Stem Cells, which reside most abundantly in your bone marrow, are cells that have the ability to become virtually any kind of cell in the body.  Stem Cells are continuously released from your bone marrow and migrate to specific tissue and organs that need help.  Once the stem cells reach the damaged organ, they become fresh, new replacements for the damaged cells.

The key element in this phenomenon is the number of stem cells released into circulation by the bone marrow.  The higher the number of circulating stem cells, the faster and more complete is the renewal.

While it is true that the passing of time is inevitable,

the notion that each passing year must bring with it

marked deterioration of physical acumen and mental

acuity, need not be.

The real question should be:

How is it possible that one man is elderly at seventy-five

while another seems to actually improve with each birthday,

celebrating his 75th running a marathon?

In September of 2005, the New England Journal of Medicine published

an article stating:

“the higher the number of circulating stem cells,

the greater the cardiovascular health.”

They also said that the level of Adult Stem Cells in a person’s bloodstream

is one of the best overall predictors of cardiovascular health, more important even than tracking cholesterol or blood pressure.

As you age, the number of stem cells in circulation begins to decrease, leaving you more vulnerable to health challenges and simply wearing out.  That’s why babies seem to heal over night while it takes Baby Boomers much longer to recover from an injury.

Simply raising the level of Adult Stem Cells in your blood,

at any age, helps to support the body’s own renewal system.

Think of health and vibrancy as a balance between the aging process, or the process of breaking down, and the process of renewal and rebuilding.  If the rate of breaking down exceeds the rate of rebuilding, then “youth” and health are jeopardized.  If the rebuilding and renewal exceeds the breaking down, then health and vibrancy are regained and maintained.
